Making small talk with hair stylists occasionally makes me uncomfortable, so I’ve been meaning to try perming my own hair for a while. My hair is naturally a loose wave, but as it grows longer than shoulder length, gravity takes over and it appears straighter and straighter. I decided to perm my hair to ameliorate this and give my hair more volume. I cleared 3-4 hours one afternoon for this, and the perm solution worked well. **Do NOT try perming your hair without reading the printed instructions and doing research online.** SUPPLIES: - perm solution - perm rods - hair shears INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Wash hair with clarifying shampoo 2. Brush hair and cut/trim hair ends so that hair is even before perm. The nice thing about cutting your own wavy hair is that uneveness blends in better than straight hair 3. Wet hair and use pre-perm solution 4. Section hair with comb, wrap ends with end papers, roll onto perm rods & secure. Repeat until all your hair is secured with perm rods. This is the longest part! Note: the end papers are important because otherwise your hair will slip through the rods 5. Wrap cotton coil around temple and head - Vaseline helps the cotton adhere to the temples 6. Apply perm solution to each rod. I used the whole bottle to be safe. 7. Unwind a rod and check for an S shaped curl after the time noted in the table 8. Rinse hair and rods in the shower for 5 minutes 9. Dry each rod with a towel. Since you're at home, you should be able to air dry as well. 10. Apply neutralizer solution to each rod. 11. After 5 minutes, unwind the rods. I placed the used rods in the sink so I could wash them. Brush your hair with your fingers. 12 Rinse neutralizer out of your hair in the shower. 13. Apply post perm conditioner 14. Don't wash hair with shampoo for 48hours. This perm doesn't smell as strongly as others. After the 48 hour mark, you can wash, comb, and trim any ends that were fried

I just just turned 75 and have been getting perms since I was probably 5 years old. My hair has always been baby fine but stick straight! Perms always make my hair thicker and I dont have to curl it everyday when I have a perm. I make sure I leave the permanent curlers (medium size) in long enough to look a little too curly, because I want the perm to last at least 6-9 months. With the perm, after I wash my hair, it's way too curly to wear as it is, but I use a big barrel curling iron to take out some of the curl, so my hair will look nice but stay in for several days. This is a great brand that I used to buy at CVS, but they don't sell perms anymore. This one I bought is for fine, color treated hair. I've needed another perm for at least 3 months now and my straight hair is driving me crazy (falling in my face) because it has NO body whatsoever! People who have body in their hair (that's not stick straight) have NO idea whatsoever how lucky they are!! I used to even give perms to my mom and sisters when I was age 14-18, before I left for college. It's unbelievable how much money I've saved over the past 55+ years, by giving myself, my own perms!

I bought this product to do a diy reverse (straight perm) as my hair is naturally wavy. I recalled doing this once in my teen years and it going very well, and loving the results. But, I guess results and luck don't always repeat themselves. This product states it is safe for colored hair; however, upon application of this product, almost immediately my hair stated to frizz up. I hurried and rinsed it out right away (within the first 2 minutes), but the damage was already done. Upon rinsing, I felt my hair swell and the texture felt very strange. After getting out of the shower, I was scared to see the damage, and rightfully so. I gently started to comb my hair from the bottom up, with a wide tooth comb. To my dismay, large chunks of my hair began to come with it. A lot of my hair that didn't come out, coiled up, and became frizzy. I was horrified and felt so disappointed, dismayed, and shocked. The damage was nearly immediate from this product, and I have been desperately trying to regain my hairs integrity ever since. I would not recommend this product whatsoever. I had to cut my own hair, add some side bangs, have lost length, and have some short layers that broke off. I have spent both a lot of money and time buying products and researching how to heal my remaining hair. Thankfully, I had very thick, coarse (tough) hair or I might not have any left. I have been using Olaplex 3, have done one Aphogee treatment, am using oils and leave in conditioners in my hair. The Olaplex 3 has helped the most. In the future, I am switching to demi permanent color, and using a very low activator, so there's no lift taking place. Sadly, the only real cure has been to cut away the most damaged sections. My warning to you would be not to use this if you have ever done anything to your hair, and you don't have virgin hair- even then, I am not sure it is worth the risk. I have felt so disappointed and discouraged but am thankful for products like Olaplex 3. It has been one of the few things that makes my hair even somewhat manageable now.

It's an okay product. My hair takes perms easily, so I left the product in for the least amount of time suggested and still got some frizzing. The pre- and post-conditioning probably helped to minimize this though. I had noticed in another review, however, that others complained about the drip guard being missing from the box. I specifically reread the product description before purchasing and it said the product comes with a drip guard. The box that I received also said it contained a drip guard. It did not. So I just worked carefully and used a lot of towels to catch the drips. Whether I was able to do a work-around, though, is not relevant to the point that the box does not contain a drip guard even though the online description and the box description clearly state that it does.

I have fine, thin hair, so perming my hair can be fatal to my hair. I've had quite a few perms in my life. Some done professionally and some home perms. Almost ALL of them were terrible. They ended up a frizz, no nice curl at all and my hair ended up fried, breaking off etc. I have used this product twice now. There is no itching, no burning at all. I've watched a YouTube video about proper rolling technique for spirals. I've been using biotin for a few months now which helped my hair growth IMMENSELY therefore I could do a spiral. The perm turned out exactly they way that I wanted. I love it. It will not last as long as the stronger ones but that's fine with me. I would rather have a soft, non-damaging perm that I have to redo every three months than an scalp eating one that leaves me with broken off hair and frizz. Ladies, PLEASE sleep on a satin pillow. I thought that it was nonsense when I read that this is best for your hair. Let me tell you. Sleeping on a satin pillow will leave your hair smooth, shiny, bouncy and you won't wake up with a birds nest on top of your head. It was a game changer for me. Also, you're not supposed to wash your hair for the first 48 hrs after the perm (all ladies know this) So, when you get up in the morning, just spritz your hair with water from a spray bottle and you're good to go. I recommend this product and will order more just to have it on hand.

I was a hairdresser many years ago, so I have used many different perms. I used this one for tinted hair on myself and I can honestly say it's one of the best perms I have ever used. The condition of my hair, even before I used the leave in conditioner felt really good, and the curls soft and bouncy. It's now going to be my regular perm. I can't recommend it enough.
